FLAVOUR SPERIMENTALE

Flavour Sperimentale: A Comprehensive Musical History (1997–2026)

Flavour Sperimentale is an Italian avant-garde and experimental music project founded in Acquasparta (Umbria) by guitarist and composer Nicola Cruciani. Over nearly three decades, the project has transitioned from a collective psychedelic rock band into a visionary "sonic laboratory" that bridges the gap between ambient electronics, minimalism, and conceptual art.

1. The Roots: Flavour (1997–2005)

The project began in October 1997 as Flavour, a quartet featuring Cruciani, keyboardist Giovanni Armadoro, Francesco Francia (drums/engineering), and Paolo Feliciotti (bass/guitar). Their early identity was forged through free improvisations, krautrock-influenced instrumental passages, and psychedelic drifts.

  • Early Live Milestones: They made their live debut on May 1, 1998, in Acquasparta. This was followed by performances at Spoleto Rock (1998), James Brown in Terni (1998), and ITC Terni (1999).
  • The Archival Legacy: Although the original lineup dissolved in early 2000, their raw sound was preserved in the 2005 archival album ***I Maius MXCVIII (AD Bootleg)***, which features the 23-minute centerpiece "Rituale".

2. Solo Avant-Garde and the "Flavour Lab" (2005–2011)

Following the band's split, Cruciani launched Flavour Sperimentale as a solo vehicle for radical experimentation. This era was marked by academic explorations:

  • Experimental Works: Zu (2005) explored musique concrète and John Cage’s prepared piano, while Elektronische Musik (2006) was inspired by the electronic school of Stockhausen.
  • Flavour Lab: This collaborative strand produced works with online artists, such as the loop-based electronic piece By Hook Or By Loop.
  • The Pink Trilogy: Between 2008 and 2010, Cruciani revisited the psychedelic territories of late-60s Pink Floyd with the albums A Provision of Mirages, Madamadama, and Queen Moo Breakfast.

3. Thematic Cycles: Exalogia Colorum and the Quadrilogy of Absence (2012–2016)

The mid-2010s were defined by massive conceptual projects:

  • Bar Psichedelico: Under this alias, Cruciani released the Exalogia Colorum (2015), a six-album series (including The Slight Shade of Fading, Polar Solstice, Yellow Jackets, Themes from the Lumber Room, Opus Grey and Nyctophilia) where each release explored a specific atmospheric tone.
  • The Quadrilogy of Absence (2016): A series of four ambient albums—Onirica, Odissea Interstellare dell'Aringa Rossa, Didascalia per un Gesto, and Hydrophonia—focusing on dreamlike, cosmic, and aquatic soundscapes.

4. Cosmic Explorations and "In No Man's Land" (2017–2019)

In 2016, a transformative partnership began with Salerno-based artist Vincenzo Lardo (240bpm).

  • Multimedia Concepts: Their collaboration produced In No Man's Land (2017), an ambitious concept work blending ambient and trip-hop. This project was notably expanded into a stage musical (performed in May 2018) and a film presentation (December 2017).
  • The Kosmische Turn: In 2018, the project released Эхо Космоса (Echo of the Cosmos), diving into the kosmische musik tradition of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze.
  • Partial Reunion: 2019 saw a partial return of the original Flavour members for the album Say Goodbye to Winter.

5. Global Collaborations and Classical Departures (2020–2024)

The COVID-19 era fostered new digital collaborations and genre shifts:

  • M.E.N.: Cruciani and Lardo joined Marco Grieco to create Spillover (2024), a prog-psychedelic concept album released via Marracash Records.
  • Classical Influence: In 2021, the project released Small Songs for a Smile, an instrumental album of piano sonatas and studies composed by Giovanni Armadoro.
  • Thematic Pop: The duo 240bpm & Flavour explored identity and transformation in the psychedelic pop-rock album You Were All Here (2021).
  • Personal Reflection: The Infinite Horizon (2024) was released as a deeply personal dedication to Cruciani's late father.

6. International Presence and Live Returns (2023–2026)

Flavour Sperimentale has achieved a vast international footprint through global compilations and radio broadcasts:

  • Compilations: The project has participated in international releases including the Steve Albini Tribute (Completely Gone Recordings, USA), and French compilations VOYAGER 13 and Barbe a Papa (Camembert Electrique). Other notable participations include labels such as Ifar (UK), Otcrah Records (Mexico), Shorty Music (Ukraine), and Attenuation Circuit (Germany).
  • Radio Coverage: Full broadcasts of albums like Hydrophonia and Echo of the Cosmos have been featured on Radio Uap (Poland), with further airplay on Syndae (Germany).
  • Recent Live Activity: A documented return to live performance occurred with the album Backflow (2023). Key events included Water Fest II (2023), It’s All About Music in Acquasparta (2023), and the VIVA MÉXICO SEÑORES RUIDOSOS virtual concert (2021).

7. Recent Evolution: Return to Origins (2025–2026)

The project's latest phase balances accessibility with raw recording techniques:

  • A Fleeting Sense of Perception (2025): A move toward structured psychedelic pop.
  • Dust on Tracks (2025): A collection documenting the long creative journey with Vincenzo Lardo.
  • Unplugged 0808 (January 2026): An acoustic live album recorded at Francesco Francia’s studio in Acquasparta. Stripped of electric superstructures, it represents a definitive "return to origins".
